Ottawa Visual Artist: Tom Brooks

Tom Brooks is a Canadian communications educator, network instructor, industrial designer and visual artist. He is influenced by non-narrative abstraction, pop art, graphic design and scientific phenomenon. He is currently interested in human evolution and its link to the internet of everything. His current work explores education and man's relationship with work and self fulfillment in this time of social change. His layered portraits of famous and local artists are influenced by analog recordings of distortion and interference patterns. In some cases these patterns will be layered with images and text.

“I create multimedia works that speaks to our changing relationship with work in a media driven society. Political forces and automation are at odds with our traditional notions of work. I feel we must find new purpose in lifelong learning and the ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated pursuit of knowledge. The Ottawa school of art is a place where I re-discovered that joy of learning. As the definition states, learning not only enhances social inclusion, active citizenship, and personal development, but also self-sustainability, as well as competitiveness and employability. In my art I use well known images and text to suggest the manipulation of data and the passage of time. I apply acrylic paint to using trowels, brushes, rollers, and stencilling. I have displayed my art in many juried, national and local art shows, in Canada. I have a Bachelor's Degree in, Industrial Design and Education."
